چکیده

In this paper, we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method to satisfy a multisymplectic conservation law, when applied to a canonical Hamiltonian system of partial differential equations. We show that these conditions are satisfied by the “hybridized” versions of several of the most commonly-used finite element methods, including mixed, nonconforming, and discontinuous Galerkin methods. (Interestingly, for the continuous Galerkin method in dimension greater than one, we show that multisymplecticity only holds in a weaker sense.) Consequently, these general-purpose finite element methods may be used for structurepreserving discretization (or semidiscretization) of canonical Hamiltonian systems of ODEs or PDEs. This establishes multisymplecticity for a large class of arbitrarily-high-order methods on unstructured meshes.

An Analysis of the Embedded Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Second-Order Elliptic Problems

The embedded discontinuous Galerkin methods are obtained from hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods by a simple change of the space of the hybrid unknown. In this paper, we consider embedded methods for second-order elliptic problems obtained from hybridizable discontinuous methods by changing the space of the hybrid unknown from discontinuous to continuous functions. This change results ...

A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for two-phase flow in heterogeneous porous media

We present a new method for simulating incompressible immiscible two-phase flow in porous media. The semi-implicit method decouples the wetting phase pressure and saturation equations. The equations are discretized using a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method. The proposed method is of high order, conserves global/local mass balance, and the number of globally coupled degrees of fre...

Error Analysis for a Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Helmholtz Equation

Finite element methods for acoustic wave propagation problems at higher frequency result in very large matrices due to the need to resolve the wave. This problem is made worse by discontinuous Galerkin methods that typically have more degrees of freedom than similar conforming methods. However hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods offer an attractive alternative because degrees of freedom...

Bridging the Hybrid High-Order and Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Methods

We build a bridge between the hybrid high-order (HHO) and the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods in the setting of a model diffusion problem. First, we briefly recall the construction of HHO methods and derive some new variants. Then, by casting the HHO method in mixed form, we identify the numerical flux so that the HHO method can be compared to HDG methods. In turn, the incorpo...
